  1. WinJPEG v.2.1 is a shareware image viewer with image processing and
  2. conversion capabilities for Microsoft Windows 3.x.  It has the following
  3. features:

  5. - display JPEG, TIFF, Targa, GIF, PCX, or Windows BMP images
  6. - export an image to JPEG, TIFF, Targa, GIF, PCX, Windows BMP, or OS/2 BMP
  7. - display of JPEG images with 1-pass/2-pass quantization and
  8.   Floyd-Steinberg dithering
  9. - color balance: red, green, and blue adjustment
  10. - hue, saturation, and brightness adjustment
  11. - image rotation, vertical or horizontal flip, image resizing, and image
  12.   cropping
  13. - batch file compression of GIF, TIFF, or TARGA files to JPEG File
  14.   Interchange Format (JFIF) with optional smoothing
  15. - slideshow: display selected files sequentially with a cycle option
  16. - copy a portion of or the entire image  to the clipboard, paste an
  17.   image from the clipboard
  18. - support for Windows 3.1 features like drag-drop and common dialogs
  19. - support for file name extension association and starting a slideshow
  20.   from the command line

  22. There are two versions of WinJPEG: a 386 version for 386's or better and
  23. a 286 one for 286's or better.  The shareware version is a fully
  24. funtional 286 version. The 386 version can be obtained by registering
  25. WinJPEG.

  41. DISTRIBUTION CONDITIONS
  42. You are free to distribute this shareware version of WinJPEG as long as the
  43. following conditions are met:
  44.   1) The distributed archive must contain ONLY the files listed above.
  45.   2) The contents of this archive are NOT MODIFIED in any way.
  46.   3) This version is not to be sold.  However, a reasonable disk copying fee
  47.      is permitted.
  48.   4) This version is not to be bundled with a commercially sold package
  49.      without permission from the authors.

  52. INSTALLATION NOTES
  53. If you associate a file extension with WinJPEG, you can double click on
  54. a file with that extension in File Manager and WinJPEG will
  55. automatically display that file.  There are two ways to associate an
  56. extension with WinJPEG.  The easiest way is to run File Manager, to
  57. click on a file with the desired extension, and to select the Associate
  58. command from the File Menu.  Then type "winjpeg.exe" with the
  59. appropriate path (e.g. c:\winjpeg\winjpeg.exe).  The other way is to
  60. modify the Extensions section of the "win.ini" file in your Windows
  61. directory.  Your "win.ini" may look like this after you modify it:

  72. Note that you don't have to use the suggested extensions (e.g. you can use
  73. .jpe instead of .jpg); WinJPEG will automatically detect the file format.

  75. If you are using Windows 3.0, you must copy "commdlg.dll" and
  76. "shell.dll" to your Windows system directory(e.g. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM).

  78. If WinJPEG GPF's, we recommend that you restart Windows before
  79. running WinJPEG again.

  82. HOW TO ACCESS ON-LINE HELP
  83. Help for menu commands can be accessed by 1) using the Index command
  84. under the Help menu, 2) pressing shift-F1 and selecting an active menu
  85. item, or 3) selecting an active menu item without releasing the mouse
  86. button, pressing the F1 key, and then releasing the mouse button.  Topics
  87. such as JPEG formats, corrupt GIF files, how to obtain updates, etc. are
  88. also accessible under the Index command.

  91. HOW TO REGISTER
  92. If you use WinJPEG for more than 14 days, you are expected to register
  93. WinJPEG.  When you register, you will receive the latest 286 and 386
  94. versions of WinJPEG, a user manual, and a collection of JPEG images (we
  95. will put as many as we can fit on 2 720k 3 1/2" floppies, on 1 1.44M 
  96. 3 1/2" floppy, or on 4 360k 5 1/4" floppies).  Also, the registered
  97. version does not have the reminder-to-register screen at the start.

  99. The registration fee is only $20.  MA residents, add 5% sales tax to the
  100. registration fee.  US residents, add $3 for shipping and handling;
  101. non-US residents, add $8 for shipping and handling.   If you want
  102. WinJPEG e-mailed to your account instead of having it physically mailed
  103. to you, there is no extra shipping charge.  For e-mail registrations,
  104. you need a utility called "uudecode" to decode the uuencoded file that
  105. we e-mail to you.  Note that the uuencoded file is rather large; it is 
  106. greater than 500k for WinJPEG v.2.1.  Compuserve users may find it less
  107. expensive to receive WinJPEG via U.S. Mail.

  109. Registrations with the incorrect fee or with non-US currency will be
  110. returned.

  112. Because of the lengthy time it takes to produce a new version and to
  113. distribute it to registered users, updates are no longer free.  Updates
  114. will cost $5.  Those who initially received version 1.6 when they
  115. registered can obtain the next update for free.  Shipping fees described
  116. above apply to updates as well.  Updates are available when you see a
  117. new shareware version.
